Ultimaker 3D printer overview
Ultimaker Original and Ultimaker Original+
Ultimaker Original was Ultimaker's first printer. This model was mainly sold as a kit, but it was also available in a fully assembled version. The Ultimaker Original had an iconic wooden frame, which gives the printer a distinctive look. To this day, the Ultimaker Original is a popular 3D printer for beginners, not least thanks to its low price. The first Ultimaker 3D printers were delivered in late 2011, early 2012.
A little later, Ultimaker released the Original+. The ?plus model? bat some advantages over its predecessor. For example, a heated print bed and a stronger main plate were installed. For a while there was also an upgrade kit to retrofit the new features to older Ultimaker Original models.
Ultimaker 2, Ultimaker 2 Go and Ultimaker 2 Extended
In 2014, the Ultimaker 2 followed, which is probably the most groundbreaking product in the company's history. The new printer was only supplied as a pre-assembled version and quickly established itself as the de facto ultimate in desktop 3D printing. The new, white acrylic panels, the rotary wheel for the control and all the mechanics and the suspension of the print head are partially retained in Ultimaker 3D printers to this day. The proven and reliable system was ideal for scaling to different sizes. For this reason, Ultimaker brought out Ultimaker 2 Extended and Ultimaker 2 Go in early 2015 at CES in Las Vegas. The extended version received a 10 cm larger installation space in the Z direction and, thanks to its great success, was also continued in later units. The Ultimaker 2 Go was a small, handy printer that could even be carried as a backpack with an add-on. Thanks to the small ?footprint? (ie small footprint and space requirements) and the relatively low price, the Ultimaker 2 Go is still used today by manufacturers and hobbyists for a wide variety of projects.
Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+
Exactly one year after the release of Ultimaker 2 Extended, the "Plus" version of the machines followed at CES 2016. At that time, the company had already passed 100 employees. Similar to Ultimaker Original+, Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ also offered some benefits and additional improvements. This time, the feeder in particular has been improved. A 5-to-1 gear ratio ensured that the material feed was even more reliable and a greater variety of filaments could be printed. In addition, the Olsson block caused a small revolution. Pressure nozzles could now be replaced with a simple socket wrench. This feature made it possible to implement print nozzles with different nozzle diameters and nozzle materials.
There was also a so-called "Extrusion Upgrade Kit" for the Ultimaker 2+, which made it possible to upgrade the Ultimaker 2.
Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended
At the end of 2016, another disruption occurred at a presentation of the young company in New York. Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended made affordable dual-extrusion 3D printing possible for the first time. Thanks to an ingenious switching system, a print nozzle is raised so that only one nozzle is in contact with the printed model at a time. This made 3D printing with multiple materials in high quality and at a fair price possible for the first time. In addition, the Ultimaker 3 also offers various comfort features such as automatic print bed calibration, a webcam and a network connection. Different colors, different materials or even water-soluble support materials can be processed via double-extruded 3D printing.
Ultimaker S5
The next logical step for the manufacturer followed in the spring of 2018. The Ultimaker S5 was not only the introduction of the "Studio" line, but also offered a significantly larger installation space and an intuitive touch screen for operation for the first time. Furthermore, the S5 can be closed at the front using the built-in glass doors. This, in combination with a new hardened print core and some improvements in the material supply, ensures that industrial plastics such as glass fiber or carbon fiber (carbon), filled PAs (polyamide/nylon) or filaments such as PC-ABS (polycarbonate - acrylonitrile - butadiene-styrene copolymer) can be printed. Ultimaker S5 can be expanded with Material Station and Air Manager. Both offer useful nutritional supplements for industrial users,
Ultimaker S3
As the latest model, Ultimaker presented the Ultimaker S3 in the fall of 2019 as the successor to the Ultimaker 3. The S3 brings the "studio" functions of the Ultimaker S5 into the smaller frame of the Ultimaker 3. Compared to the Ultimaker 3, for example, the leveling of the print bed much more precise, the glass door is standard and the material guide is equipped with a filament sensor. Like the Ultimaker S5, the S3 also supports the Ultimaker Material Alliance, a program for substrate manufacturers. Ready-made print profiles for different types of plastic can be downloaded via the Material Alliance, further reducing the entry barrier to 3D printing. This is a great relief, especially for beginners or those who like to try many different filaments.
